Philadelphia City Hall
Building Beaux-Arts city hall in Philadelphia topped by William Penn
At the heart of Philadelphia’s grid, City Hall is a Second Empire masonry building topped by William Penn’s bronze. Tourists visit the observation deck, study civic architecture and cross nearby public squares.
Philadelphia City Hall is the municipal seat of government located in Center City Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, completed in 1901 and notable for its large central tower topped by a statue of William Penn.
The building is an ornate example of Second Empire civic architecture with a clock tower that rises above the surrounding streets. The tower contains an observation level that offers city views and the exterior includes sculptural work and a large public plaza. Public access is available via guided tours for parts of the interior and the tower on a seasonal schedule.
Design and construction were led by architect John McArthur Jr., with work carried out through the late 19th century and finishing in 1901; it has served continuously as the city’s administrative center since completion. The tower and statue have been important civic symbols and the building has undergone restorations to preserve its masonry and interior finishes.
The building sits at Broad and Market Streets in Center City, adjacent to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and within walking distance of many downtown attractions.
- Tower tours: Tours of the tower are offered seasonally and the observation level gives one of the best views of Philadelphia's grid and the nearby Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
- Height and statue: The building is capped by a bronze statue of William Penn and reaches roughly 167 metres (548 feet) to the top of the statue, making the tower a prominent city landmark.
