Phanagoria
Archaeological Site Ancient Greek colony and archaeological site on Taman
Phanagoria on the Taman Peninsula preserves ruins of a once-thriving Greek colony with necropoleis and scattered foundations; archaeological displays and coastal views draw visitors interested in ancient Black Sea history.
Phanagoria is an ancient Greek city-site on the Taman Peninsula in Krasnodar Krai, Russia, founded around the 6th century BCE and later occupied through Roman and Byzantine times. It was one of the largest Greek settlements on the northern Black Sea coast and is now an important archaeological reserve.
The exposed remains include settlement terraces, defensive walls, and extensive burial grounds with tumuli and inhumations; the site also yields finds spanning several centuries of occupation. Visitors can see large necropolis areas and a museum-reserve that displays pottery, inscriptions and carved stonework recovered from the site.
Archaeological work has been carried out intermittently since the 19th century and continues under Russian research teams; the site records Greek colonization, Bosporan Kingdom influence and later Byzantine presence. Over time the settlement shifted and contracted as the coastline and trade networks changed.
The ruins lie on the Taman Peninsula near the modern village of Taman on the Black Sea/Sea of Azov littoral. The site sits on low coastal terraces and is accessible by road from towns on the peninsula.
- Access and excavations: Excavations are ongoing and parts of the site are active archaeological zones with restricted access at times.
- Good viewpoints: Best viewing of the ruins and coastal setting is from the raised acropolis area and the museum displays nearby.
