Pevensey Castle
Castle Ruined medieval castle on English coast with Roman origins
Ruined coastal fortress in East Sussex with Roman and medieval phases; visitors explore earthworks, curtain walls and tidal marsh views while tracing links to 1066 and English coastal defence.
Pevensey Castle is a historic fortification near the village of Pevensey on the south coast of England. The site includes extensive remains of a late Roman Saxon Shore fort that were later reused and extended as a Norman and medieval castle.
Standing as an incomplete enclosure of stone walls, gatehouse and internal earthworks, the site displays a sequence of Roman 3rd-century masonry and medieval castle structures from the Norman period onwards. The surviving fabric and earthworks make it possible to trace the site’s reuse from Roman military port to medieval fortress.
The fortification was adapted by the Normans after the 11th century and continued in military and administrative use through the medieval period; later it fell into ruin and is now preserved as a historic monument. It is managed as a heritage site with public access to the ruins and ramparts.
Pevensey Castle sits beside Pevensey Bay in East Sussex, near the village of Pevensey on England’s south coast.
