Petroglyphs of Lake Onega and the White Sea
Historical Site Extensive prehistoric petroglyph ensembles on northern Russian coasts
Lake Onega and White Sea petroglyphs present thousands of Bronze Age carvings-boats, hunters and animals-on exposed rock faces; visitors access panels by boat and study the prehistoric imagery.
The Petroglyphs of Lake Onega and the White Sea are concentrations of prehistoric rock carvings on the shores of Lake Onega and on the coasts of the White Sea in northwest Russia. They comprise large ensembles of carved motifs that document Mesolithic to Bronze Age artistic activity.
Visitors encounter open-air rock panels with carved figures, hunting scenes, boats and abstract motifs incised on horizontal or gently sloping bedrock near water. The locations are spread across a wide geographic area and are usually accessed from nearby settlements or by boat.
The panels are valued both for their quantity and for the variety of motifs that provide insight into subsistence practices and symbolic expression in the region’s prehistory. Many panels are best viewed in calm weather when boat access is possible.
The petroglyphs were produced over several millennia during the Mesolithic and Bronze Age periods and were later recorded by researchers from the 19th century onward. They represent one of the major concentrations of prehistoric rock art in northern Europe.
The sites are located in the Republic of Karelia around Lake Onega and on islands and coasts of the White Sea in northwestern Russia, set in a boreal landscape of lakes, forests and coastal waters.
- Setting of panels: Rock art panels are dispersed around Lake Onega and coastal White Sea locations and are often found on flat bedrock surfaces near water, reflecting their prehistoric context.
Tips for Visiting Petroglyphs of Lake Onega and the White Sea #
- Visit these petroglyph concentrations in the summer months (June-August) when boat access on Lake Onega and coastal routes to the White Sea is most reliable and local guides operate regular trips.
- Take a guided boat trip from regional hubs (for example Petrozavodsk or coastal ports) so you can access panels on remote shores and learn the archaeological context-the panels are often reached only by water and benefit from an expert interpreter.
- Combine visits to open‑air panels with the local museums in Karelia that hold casts, research materials and contextual exhibits-many visitors see the rock art but miss the museum displays that explain motifs and dating.
