Petřín
Mountain Prague hill park with observation tower and gardens
Petřín hill in Prague provides leafy walks, the Petřín lookout tower and maze, plus sweeping views of the city; locals and visitors use the funicular, gardens and cemeteries for short escapes from the centre.
Petřín is a wooded hill and large public park on the west bank of the Vltava in Prague, noted for its observation tower and panoramic city views. The hill has long been developed as a recreational area with formal gardens, viewpoints and visitor attractions.
The hill’s main attractions include the Petřín Tower, a 63.5 metre steel observation tower built in 1891 that provides wide views over Prague; a historic funicular railway that links the lower town to the park; and a small mirror maze and landscaped gardens. Paths and viewpoints are spread across the hillside and many routes climb to the tower and adjacent terraces.
Petřín has served as a public leisure area since the 19th century, with the tower and funicular added for the 1891 exhibitions and subsequently maintained as visitor facilities. Over time the hill’s lawns, orchards and garden features were reshaped into the present park layout.
The hill rises above Prague’s Malá Strana on the left bank of the Vltava, a short walk or funicular ride from Prague Castle and the Charles Bridge area in the city centre.
- Best time to visit: Peak views across Prague are clearest on dry days and at sunset; the tower and funicular can queue at weekends and holidays.
- Terrain and access: Wear comfortable shoes if walking the park paths; the hill has multiple stairways and landscaped trails connecting viewpoints and gardens.
What to See #
- Petřín Tower: A 63.5 metre steel observation tower built in 1891, modelled on the Eiffel Tower, offering panoramic views of Prague from its elevated platform reached by stair (about 299 steps) or lift.
- Petřín Funicular: The hill funicular links Malá Strana (Lesser Town) with the upper park area and provides the quickest access route up the slope.
- Mirror Maze and gardens: A small historic mirror maze established near the tower alongside landscaped gardens and viewpoints, often visited with the tower and funicular.
How to Get to Petřín #
From Malá Strana/Újezd take the Petřín funicular to the top station. Alternatively, walk from Charles Bridge across the Kampa area and scale the hill in 20-30 minutes. Public transport (tram lines 9, 12, 20) serve Újezd and nearby stops.
Tips for Visiting Petřín #
- Take the funicular from Újezd (near Malá Strana) to avoid the steeper climb - the carriages date from the early 20th century and are part of the charm.
- Climb the Petřín Observation Tower late afternoon for sunset views over Prague's red roofs - the light is excellent for photographs.
- Explore the mirror maze in the tower's lower area (small extra fee) and the small vineyards on the hill's slopes that locals still tend.
