Petit Piton
Mountain Steep volcanic peak and UNESCO World Heritage landmark
One of Saint Lucia’s twin volcanic spires near Soufrière, the Petit Piton is a steep climb inside the UNESCO Pitons Management Area; visitors come for hiking, coastal views and nearby dive sites and hot springs.
Petit Piton is one of two steep volcanic spires on the southwest coast of Saint Lucia, rising to about 743 metres and forming a dramatic pair with the larger Gros Piton. The twin peaks and surrounding marine and terrestrial habitats are protected within the Pitons Management Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The peak is very steep and rocky; routes to the summit are technical and typically undertaken only with experienced guides. Coastal coral reefs and clear waters at the Pitons’ base support snorkeling and diving, and a narrow sandy bay lies between the two peaks, offering beach access and boat landings.
Geologically the Pitons are volcanic plugs formed by hardened magma and erosion, and the site was inscribed by UNESCO in 2004 for its outstanding volcanic landforms and associated biodiversity. The Pitons rise above the town of Soufrière on Saint Lucia’s southwest coast and are visible from many points along the island’s western shoreline.
- Elevation: Summit elevation is approximately 743 metres, and the peak is the smaller and steeper of Saint Lucia's two main Pitons.
- UNESCO status: Part of the Pitons Management Area, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 for its geology, biodiversity and cultural landscape.
What to See #
- Summit and ridges: The steep volcanic spire of the Petit Piton rises directly from the coastal slopes and sea, with a rocky summit and narrow ridgelines; climbing is steep and recommended only with experienced guides.
- Reefs and coastal waters: Fringing coral reefs and coastal waters at the Pitons' base provide snorkeling and diving sites and a sandy bay between the two peaks forms a sheltered shoreline used for beach access.
