Who's Petare For?

Foodies

Petare’s street stalls and mercados are a good place to try Caracas-style arepas, empanadas and cheap local snacks. Expect home-cooked flavors sold along main arteries of the barrio; prices are very low and the best finds are in daytime markets.

Backpackers

Budget travellers can use Petare as an ultra-low-cost base for exploring eastern Caracas, with cheap local comedores and informal hospedajes. Exercise caution after dark and stick to daytime markets and guided community tours rather than wandering alone.

Nature Buffs

Petare sits on the low slopes beneath El Ávila (Ávila National Park), so day hikes into the park are doable from nearby sectors. Use trusted guides from Caracas and plan transport carefully; green escapes are accessible despite urban surroundings.

Party Animals

Local bars and música venues in Petare offer lively, affordable nights with Venezuelan folkloric and salsa sets. Nightlife is very local and energetic, but safety varies by street and you should go with locals or a group.

How to Get to Petare

Petare is a populous district in the eastern Caracas metropolitan area; most visitors arrive via Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS) at Maiquetía. From the airport you usually transfer by taxi, shared van or a combination of bus and Metro de Caracas to reach Petare's Metro stations and neighbourhoods.

By Air

Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS): The main international gateway for Caracas, located in Maiquetía (about 20-30 km from Petare). From the airport you can take the official airport taxi booths (typical private taxi transfers to eastern Caracas/Petare cost around US$20-35 and take roughly 45-75 minutes depending on traffic), shared airport vans/minibuses (roughly US$6-12, 50-80 minutes), or rent a car at the airport. Road connections can be slow at peak times, so allow plenty of extra time for journeys to Petare.

By Train & Bus

Train: Metro de Caracas - Petare is served by the Metro de Caracas network (Line 1 has stations serving eastern Caracas, including Petare and nearby Palo Verde). The metro is the most reliable way to reach Petare from central Caracas; typical journeys from downtown stations to Petare take about 15-30 minutes and fares are heavily subsidized (generally under US$1 per ride).

Bus: Local buses and colectivos connect Petare with the rest of Caracas; the main long‑distance bus terminal serving Caracas is Terminal La Bandera for intercity routes. Local bus rides and colectivo fares are very low (usually well under US$1) but schedules and vehicle conditions vary; travel times inside the metro area are typically 10-40 minutes depending on route and traffic.

How to Get Around Petare

Navigating Petare works best by combining the Metro de Caracas for longer east-west trips with short bus, taxi or walking connections. The metro is generally the fastest and most reliable option; use taxis for night travel, heavy luggage, or when metro service is limited.
