The Periyar River is the longest river in Kerala, India, arising in the Western Ghats and flowing west toward the Arabian Sea. It is a major freshwater source for irrigation, hydropower and towns along its course.

Key attractions along the river corridor include the reservoir and boat-accessible lake within the Periyar protected area, where boat safaris are used for wildlife viewing, and several hydroelectric and irrigation works fed by the river. The watercourse supports fisheries and agricultural plains downstream.

The river basin has been modified over time by dam and reservoir construction to supply irrigation and power; one of the notable structures on the river is the Mullaperiyar Dam, built in the late 19th century. These interventions have shaped water management and regional development.

The Periyar River is best visited at Periyar Tiger Reserve / Periyar Lake near Thekkady in Idukki district, Kerala. The usual approach is by road: Thekkady is reached by state highways and is commonly driven to from Kochi (Cochin) and Kottayam; travel time from Kochi by car is commonly around 4-5 hours depending on route and traffic.

Regular state-run and private buses run from Kochi, Kottayam and other Kerala towns to Thekkady; the park entrance and boat jetty are a short walk from local bus stops and parking areas.

• Book an early‑morning boat cruise on Periyar Lake from Thekkady/Periyar Tiger Reserve to maximize wildlife sightings; early boats encounter animals coming to the water before midday heat.
• Purchase boat and park permits from the Periyar Tiger Reserve office in advance during high season, as popular morning cruises often sell out and entry is regulated by the forest department.
