Peralba
Mountain Carnic Alps mountain on Italo-Austrian border
Peralba (Monte Peralba) rises in the Carnic Alps of Veneto; day hikers use marked trails and mountain huts for panoramic ridge walks.
Peralba is a high peak in the Carnic Alps of northeastern Italy, located in the Veneto region and rising to about 2,694 metres. The mountain occupies a border area of the Carnic chain and is a marked summit for alpine hikers.
Hikers ascend Peralba for high-mountain terrain and panoramic views across the Carnic Alps; on clear days the summit offers long-range views toward neighbouring ridges and the Dolomites. Several routes approach the peak from mountain huts and alpine passes, and the terrain is typical high-Alpine rock and scree.
Peralba and the surrounding Carnic front saw fighting and fortification during the First World War, and traces of trenches and wartime positions remain on and below the summit area. Today those relics are visited by hikers interested in both mountain scenery and frontline history.
The peak sits within the Carnic Alps in northeastern Italy, near the border with Austria in the Veneto administrative region. Access is by mountain trails from nearby valleys and rifugi in the Carnic range.
- Elevation: Summit elevation 2,694 metres, a prominent peak in the Carnic Alps on the Italian side of the border with Austria.
- Historical remains: Contains visible First World War trenches and fortifications from the Austro-Italian front, which can be seen along some routes.
Tips for Visiting Peralba #
- Plan climbs for the summer months (typically June-September) when snow on Peralba's ridges is least likely and trails are most reliable.
- Check local alpine club (CAI) or regional hut information for current trail conditions and staffed refuges before setting out-weather and route quality can change rapidly in the Carnic Alps.
- Allow for an early start to avoid afternoon convective storms common in the region and consider using established trailheads on the Veneto side for straightforward access.
