Pennard Castle
Castle Clifftop medieval castle ruins above Welsh coastline
Medieval ruins atop coastal dunes on the Gower Peninsula near Pennard village; visitors come for sea views, short coastal walks and the weathered stone remains.
Pennard Castle is a ruined 12th-century stronghold on the Gower Peninsula in Wales, notable for its position above coastal dunes and views over the Bristol Channel. It is a landmark on the southern Gower coastline.
The ruins sit on a ridge above sand dunes and a golf course, providing coastal views and photographic opportunities. The compact site is typically visited as part of a coastal walk or when exploring nearby bays such as Three Cliffs and Rhossili.
Built in the medieval period, the castle was progressively abandoned after sand dunes advanced and began to encroach on the site; by the later medieval era it had fallen out of use. The surviving stonework and earthworks reflect that history of abandonment.
Perched on the Gower Peninsula’s southern edge, the ruins overlook Pennard Burrows and the coastline; the nearest settlement is the village of Pennard and the site sits close to the local golf course and coastal paths.
- Sand encroachment: Much of the site was abandoned after wind-blown sand began to bury parts of the structure in the later medieval period, which is why it survives as a ruin overlooking the dunes.
How to Get to Pennard Castle #
Pennard Castle is on the Gower Peninsula above Pennard village overlooking the dunes and coast. From Swansea it’s about 6-10 miles (around 10-15 km) west by road - drive out of Swansea toward the Gower via the A4118 and local B-roads (follow signs for Pennard/Pennard Golf Club). Park near the village or the golf-club car park and expect a 10-15 minute walk across short lanes/dunes to reach the castle ruins and the clifftop viewpoint.
Tips for Visiting Pennard Castle #
- Approach Pennard Castle via the public footpath from Pennard village rather than crossing the golf course to avoid disrupting play and to use established paths.
- Visit in late afternoon for the best light over the dunes and coastline - the ruined castle sits on eroding cliffs, so take photos from a safe distance and follow any posted cliff-safety signs.
- Combine the ruin with a walk along the nearby Pennard Sands; paths around the site give better perspectives than trying to explore the fragile masonry itself.
Best Time to Visit Pennard Castle #
Best visited late spring to early autumn (April-September) when the weather is mild and sea views are at their best.
