Peng Chau
Island Small Hong Kong island with traditional fishing village
A short ferry hop from Hong Kong Island, Peng Chau is a low-rise former fishing island with narrow lanes, seafood stalls, small temples and easy hikes like Finger Hill for coastal views.
Peng Chau is a small island within the territory of Hong Kong known for its compact village, low hills and a quiet, largely vehicle-free character. It functions as a local residential community and a popular short-trip destination from Hong Kong Island.
Short coastal walks, a modest peak with island views, historic temples and remnants of former small-scale industry and ship-repair yards. The island’s pier has regular ferry links to Central and other nearby islands, making day trips straightforward.
Historically the island supported fishing and small industrial activities; over time it has shifted towards residential use and leisure visits while retaining several traditional buildings and temples. Remaining industrial structures are now part of the island’s visual character rather than active large-scale industry.
Peng Chau lies off the northeastern coast of Lantau and west of Hong Kong Island, accessible by a 20- to 30-minute ferry ride from Central depending on the service. The pier is the main arrival point and the island village is immediately inland.
- Transport: Private cars are largely absent and the island is mainly served by foot, bicycles and small electric vehicles, so walking is the easiest way to explore.
- Visiting: Day trips are popular; check ferry schedules in advance since service frequencies vary by time of day and season.
What to See #
- Finger Hill: A low wooded hill that provides the island's main viewpoint and short walking trails to panoramic views over Peng Chau and surrounding waters.
- Tin Hau Temple: A historic seaside temple dedicated to the sea goddess, located near the island's main village and often visited by locals and day-trippers.
- Peng Chau Pier: The pier is the island's transport hub with regular ferry connections to Central on Hong Kong Island and to other nearby islands.
How to Get to Peng Chau #
Regular ferries depart from Central Pier 6 (Hong Kong Island) and from Mui Wo at Lantau on some schedules. The Standard ferry route from Central takes about 20-25 minutes. The island is compact enough to explore on foot from the landing pier.
