Pendjari National Park
National Park Savannah and wildlife reserve with elephants and predators
Pendjari National Park in Atacora features savannah and gallery forest with elephants, lions, hippos and abundant birdlife; visitors come for guided safaris and conservation-minded lodges.
Pendjari National Park is a large protected area in northwestern Benin that protects savanna, woodland and riverine habitats on the southern slopes of the Atacora massif. It is noted for its populations of large mammals and for being a key component of the wider W-Arly-Pendjari conservation landscape.
The park’s ecosystems include grassy plains, gallery forest and seasonal floodplains centred on the Pendjari River; these habitats support elephants, buffalo, various antelope species, primates and carnivores. Visitor infrastructure is concentrated near park gates and camps, with guided drives and walking safaris the main ways to see wildlife.
Pendjari lies in the Atacora Department of Benin, bordering Burkina Faso to the north and forming part of the transboundary W-Arly-Pendjari conservation area that extends across national borders.
- Best time for wildlife viewing: Dry-season wildlife viewing is best from November to February when animals concentrate near rivers and waterholes.
- Conservation importance: Pendjari forms the western component of the W-Arly-Pendjari transboundary complex and is one of West Africa's most important protected areas for large mammals including elephants, buffalo and several carnivore species.
What to See #
- River valley and floodplains: The Pendjari River valley and associated seasonal floodplains that provide core water sources and habitats for large mammals.
- Atacora escarpment: The Atacora escarpment and woodland savanna on the park's western boundary, which create elevational gradients and distinct vegetation zones.
- Tanguiéta gateway and camps: Park entry points and tourist facilities around the town of Tanguiéta, which serve as the principal gateway for visitors and guided safaris.
Tips for Visiting Pendjari National Park #
- Plan drives at first light or late afternoon - those are the best times for predator and elephant activity and the light is better for photography; overnight stays in Tanguiéta make early starts simple.
- Use Tanguiéta as your main gateway and sort park permits and a licensed ranger/4x4 there before setting off to avoid delays - park offices handle vehicle access and guiding requirements.
- Visit during the dry season (roughly November-February) when water concentrates wildlife and unpaved tracks are most passable; the wet season often limits access to interior sectors.
