Penang National Park
National Park Protected coastal park with beaches and rainforest trails
Small protected area on Penang Island’s northwest tip featuring coastal rainforest, short hikes to beaches like Monkey Beach and Pantai Kerachut, a coastal lighthouse and boat access.
Penang National Park is a protected coastal reserve on the northwest tip of Penang Island, Malaysia, covering roughly 1,213 hectares. It protects a mix of mangrove, coastal forest and beach habitats and is one of the country’s smaller national parks.
The park’s main attractions are short coastal hikes and boat trips to beaches such as Monkey Beach and Kerachut, the latter of which includes a meromictic lake and a turtle hatchery. Trails also lead to Muka Head and its lighthouse at the island’s northwestern tip, providing coastal viewpoints and wildlife watching.
Visitors come for beach time, rainforest trails through lowland forest, and to observe coastal ecosystems - many of the park’s highlights are reachable as day trips from the nearby resorts and George Town.
The area was designated for protection to conserve its coastal ecosystems and biodiversity; it has been managed as a national park to accommodate both conservation and controlled recreation. Over time visitor facilities and marked trails have been developed to support public access while protecting sensitive areas.
The park sits at the northwest corner of Penang Island, with its main entrance close to Teluk Bahang village and resort areas; George Town is on the island’s east coast and is the nearest major urban centre for most visitors.
- Size: Covers about 1,213 hectares, making it one of Malaysia's smallest national parks while still containing coastal forest, beaches and mangroves.
- Access and trails: The park's main entrance is near Teluk Bahang village on Penang Island's northwest coast, and trails link the headquarters to beaches and the headland; short boat rides are an alternative to walking for several beaches.
What to See #
- Monkey Beach (Pantai Kera): Monkey Beach (Pantai Kera) - a small sandy cove popular with day-trippers that is reachable by foot along coastal trails or by short boat ride from the park entrance.
- Kerachut (Pantai Kerachut): Pantai Kerachut - a quieter beach with a meromictic lake and a turtle hatchery; the lake and beach are notable natural features within the park.
- Muka Head (lighthouse): Muka Head and lighthouse - the northwestern tip of Penang Island with a jetty and a historic lighthouse marking the park's outer headland.

Penang National Park is at the northwest tip of Penang Island, near Teluk Bahang. From George Town (Komtar) it’s about 25-30 km by road (roughly 40-50 minutes’ drive) via the coastal route toward Teluk Bahang. Tips for Visiting Penang National Park #
- Start at the park headquarters in Teluk Bahang and register on arrival - the official entrance there is the hub for trails, boat transfers and park information.
- Save long uphill hikes by taking the park's ranger boat to Monkey Beach or Pantai Kerachut when services are running; the short boat trips cut travel time and let you explore more of the park in a day.
- Visit early in the morning to avoid mid-day heat and crowds, and confirm ranger notices (turtle nesting or trail closures) at the HQ before setting off.
Best Time to Visit Penang National Park #
Best visited in the relatively drier months (roughly December-February) when trails and beaches are easier to enjoy and sea conditions are calmer.
