National Park Mountain national park known for endemic Macedonian pine
Near Bitola, Pelister National Park centers on Mount Pelister with glacial lakes, dense pine forests and marked hiking trails; visitors climb for alpine views, summer flowers and winter skiing.
Pelister National Park is a protected area on Baba Mountain in southwestern North Macedonia that was declared a national park in 1948. It is noted for its high mountain ridges and relict Balkan pine forests.
The park’s main attractions are its alpine terrain, two glacial lakes (Big and Small Lake), and extensive stands of Balkan pine (Pinus peuce). Hikers use a network of marked trails to reach ridges and viewpoints at elevations around the mountain summits, while lower slopes provide forested walks and wildlife viewing.
The area was set aside for protection in the mid 20th century to conserve its unique high-altitude ecosystems and molika pine groves. Over time it has developed basic visitor facilities and marked trails while retaining much of its natural character.
Pelister National Park sits on the Baba Mountain massif south of the city of Bitola, in Bitola Municipality. The terrain is alpine and forested, rising to roughly 2,600 metres at the highest summits and containing glacial cirques and lakes.
- Best seasons: Best visited in summer for hiking on marked trails and in winter for snow sports at the nearby ski facilities on the mountain's slopes.
- Highlights: Look for the park's distinctive Pinus peuce stands and the pair of glacial lakes when planning short walks; many trails are moderate but can be steep and exposed.
What to See #
- Big and Small Lakes: Two glacial mountain lakes known locally as Golemo Ezero (Big Lake) and Malo Ezero (Small Lake) that sit high on the slopes and are focal points for hiking routes and wildlife observation.
- Molika pine forests: Extensive stands of Balkan pine (Pinus peuce), locally called molika, forming some of the park's oldest and most conspicuous forests and noted for their conservation value.
- Baba Mountain summits: Summit area on Baba Mountain with alpine ridges and viewpoints used by hikers; the highest elevations reach roughly 2,600 metres and are the origin of many marked trails.
