Pelican Lagoon Conservation Park

Pelican Lagoon Conservation Park is a protected wetland on Kangaroo Island in South Australia, designated to conserve an important coastal lagoon and its birdlife. It is notable as a habitat for large aggregations of waterbirds, including pelicans and various wading species.

The park contains shallow tidal channels, seagrass beds and intertidal mudflats that attract shorebirds and waterfowl; viewing is typically from roadside vantage points and short local walks rather than formal large-scale visitor facilities. Tidal flats and channel edges concentrate birds at low and mid tides, making those periods productive for observation.

The area was set aside under South Australian protected-area provisions to conserve the lagoon ecosystem and its wildlife, with management by state conservation authorities to balance habitat protection and public access. Vegetation and shoreline habitats have been managed to limit disturbance to nesting and feeding birds.

The conservation park sits on the north coast of Kangaroo Island near the township of American River, within the island’s network of coastal reserves. The nearest service centre is the larger town of Kingscote on Kangaroo Island.
