Peleaga
Mountain Highest peak of Retezat Mountains in Romania
Peleaga crowns Romania’s Retezat range at over 2,500 metres; hikers visit the peak for alpine trails, glacial lakes within Retezat National Park and mountain refuges.
Peleaga is the highest peak of the Retezat Mountains in Hunedoara County, Romania, reaching 2,509 metres above sea level. It is a prominent summit within Retezat National Park.
Alpine hikers typically aim for the summit for panoramic views; the mountain overlooks glacial cirques and the large Bucura Lake to the north. Routes to the top are mainly mountain hikes rather than technical climbs in summer, and the summit ridge provides extensive views across the Retezat massif.
The Retezat range was sculpted by Pleistocene glaciation and Peleaga sits among many glacial lakes and steep ridges. The area has been part of the Retezat National Park since 1935 and is managed for conservation and recreation.
Geographically the peak lies in the southwestern Romanian Carpathians within Hunedoara County, in the Transylvania region. It is inside the boundaries of Retezat National Park and is approached via mountain trails from the surrounding valleys.
- Elevation: Rises to 2,509 metres and is the highest summit of the Retezat Mountains.
- Notable nearby feature: Overlooks several glacial cirques and the large glacial lake Bucura to the north, a common objective for hikers combining lake and summit visits.
- Conservation status: Located inside Retezat National Park, Romania's first national park established in 1935, so access follows protected-area rules.
