Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian Historical Site

The Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian is an archaeological complex southwest of Beijing containing cave deposits that yielded Homo erectus remains and associated Paleolithic artifacts. The site is noted for its role in understanding early human occupation in East Asia.

The property comprises excavated limestone cave localities with fossil-bearing deposits and reconstructions or displays that interpret the hominin finds and stone tool assemblages. On-site exhibits typically present the stratigraphy, key fossils and information about the excavations.

Excavation areas and visitor displays focus on the evidence for repeated hominin occupation and on the stone tools and faunal remains recovered from the caves. The site is important for studies of early human behaviour in this region.

Systematic excavations at Zhoukoudian began in the early 20th century and produced the first discoveries of Homo erectus material from the site, including cranial remains. The finds played a major role in paleoanthropology and inspired continued research and conservation of the cave deposits.

• Go early on a weekday to avoid large school groups and tour buses that visit the Zhoukoudian museum and site later in the day.
• Allow at least a half‑day from Beijing for travel and the museum visit so you can see the exhibition halls, replica cave displays and the excavation context without rushing.
• Spend time with the onsite interpretive displays that explain the stratigraphy and excavation history-many visitors focus on the fossils but miss the broader archaeological context presented in the museum.
