Pearl Harbor
Lake U.S. naval harbor known for 1941 surprise attack
Oahu harbor known for the 1941 attack, Pearl Harbor draws visitors to the USS Arizona Memorial, museums, and historic naval ships and exhibits.
Pearl Harbor is a natural deep-water harbor on the southern shore of Oahu, Hawaii, and a major U.S. naval base. It is internationally known as the location of the 7 December 1941 Japanese attack that drew the United States into World War II.
Historic and commemorative sites around the harbor include the USS Arizona Memorial, which marks the sunken battleship’s wreck, the Battleship Missouri Memorial at Ford Island where the 1945 surrender was signed, and the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum. These museum and memorial sites interpret the events of 1941 and the Pacific war.
Pearl Harbor was developed as a naval base in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and expanded through both world wars. The 1941 attack damaged or sank multiple ships and aircraft and led to a rapid military mobilization and long-term base development.
The harbor lies on the south-central coast of Oahu adjacent to Honolulu and is reachable by road from the city and airport; the National Park Service operates the main visitor facilities and boat shuttles to selected memorials.

How to Get to Pearl Harbor #
Pearl Harbor is on the south-central coast of Oʻahu, about 10 miles (≈16 km) west of downtown Honolulu. By car take the H‑1 freeway west and follow signs for Pearl Harbor/Nimitz Highway to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center; there is on-site parking and a short walk from the visitor parking lot to the memorial and museum entrances. Commercial tour operators and hotel shuttles also run regular trips from Waikīkī and central Honolulu.
Tips for Visiting Pearl Harbor #
- Reserve timed-entry tickets for the USS Arizona Memorial through the official site (or arrive very early) - the visitor center is free but boat access to the memorial is controlled and sells out. Start at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and follow the timed-entry instructions; allow extra time for security screening and traffic into the site, especially on weekends. Many visitors focus only on the Arizona Memorial; include the separate USS Missouri and Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island (both require separate tickets) to get the fuller WWII experience. To avoid the biggest crowds, visit at opening or later in the afternoon; midday is the busiest period for tour groups and hotels' day-trip buses.
Best Time to Visit Pearl Harbor #
Visit in the shoulder seasons (spring or fall) for good weather and smaller crowds at Pearl Harbor.
