Peace Church in Świdnica

The Peace Church in Świdnica (Kościół Pokoju w Świdnicy) is a 17th-century timber-framed Protestant church in Świdnica, Lower Silesia, southwestern Poland, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is notable for its large, richly decorated wooden interior and its historical significance following the Thirty Years’ War.

The interior contains extensive wooden galleries, painted decoration and a large single nave designed to hold a Protestant congregation within the structural limits placed on non-Catholic worship buildings of the period. The church’s baroque and polychrome interior elements are especially important to visitors and scholars.

The church was constructed in the mid 17th century under the terms of the Peace of Westphalia and was built rapidly according to restrictions set by authorities at the time. It has been conserved and remains a key example of post-war Protestant architecture in Silesia.

The church stands in the town of Świdnica in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, roughly 50 kilometers southwest of Wrocław, in southwestern Poland. It is accessible from the town center and forms a major cultural and historical attraction in the region.
