Pažaislis Monastery

Pažaislis Monastery is a 17th-century Baroque monastic complex near Kaunas celebrated for its richly decorated church and coherent Baroque ensemble. The complex includes a prominent church, cloisters and supporting buildings grouped around courtyards.

Visitors come to see the ornate interior decoration, frescoes and stucco work of the monastic church and to walk the cloisters and gardens. The site also functions as a cultural venue, hosting concerts and a regular music festival that draws visitors for performances in the historical church.

The monastery was established in the later 17th century by the Camaldolese order and developed with patronage from Lithuanian noble families; it later underwent restoration and conservation to preserve its Baroque decoration and structural fabric.

The complex lies on the eastern shore of the Kaunas Reservoir, a short drive from Kaunas city, set in a semi-rural landscape outside the urban area.
