A Florida preserve protecting a broad wet prairie and basin near Gainesville, noted for wild horses and bison sightings; visitors birdwatch, hike boardwalks and use observation platforms for wildlife viewing.
Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is a large wetland and savanna preserve in northern Florida, located near Gainesville and formed by a broad shallow basin. The preserve protects extensive grasslands, marshes and open water and supports a diversity of birds and large mammals.
Open prairie and wetland viewing are the main attractions, with boardwalks and observation towers that give wide sightlines across the basin. Wildlife commonly seen includes wading birds, alligators, and resident herds of bison and feral horses; trails and canoe launches provide access for hiking and paddling.
The landscape contains long histories of Native American use and later agricultural modification; in the 20th century portions of the basin were managed for conservation and public access. The area is now managed to preserve the prairie-wetland ecosystem and to support wildlife viewing and environmental education.
The preserve lies south of Gainesville in north-central Florida, between Gainesville and the small town of Micanopy, set in a low, broad basin of prairie and marshland.
