Payachata
Mountains Twin Andean volcanic peaks on Bolivia–Chile border
The Payachata twin peaks-Parinacota and Pomerape-rise on the Bolivia-Chile border, visible from the altiplano. Climbers and landscape photographers visit for glaciated summits, high‑altitude lakes and puna ecosystems.
Payachata denotes a twin-volcano group on the high Andean plateau of the central Altiplano, comprising the neighboring cones Parinacota and Pomerape. The pair form a clear twin silhouette and are part of the volcanic landscape on the Bolivia-Chile border.
Both cones are stratovolcanoes that rise well above 6,000 metres and are prominent from nearby highland lakes and plains. The area is notable for high-altitude glaciation remnants, alpine volcanic scenery and nearby wetlands and lakes such as Laguna Chungará on the Chilean side.
Geographically the Payachata group sits in the Cordillera Occidental of the central Andes, straddling the international frontier between Bolivia and Chile and surrounded by high plateau terrain and salt flats.
- Elevation band and border location: Both major cones exceed 6,000 metres in elevation and form a prominent landmark on the high Andean plateau between Bolivia and northern Chile.
What to See #
- Twin summits: Parinacota and Pomerape are the two principal summits of the Payachata group, forming a distinctive twin-volcano silhouette on the Altiplano.
