Pay-Khoy Range
Mountains Arctic mountain range forming northeastern Ural foothills
In Russia’s Arctic north, the Pay-Khoy Range runs across tundra and permafrost; geologists and remote-area travellers come for stark landscapes, migration routes for birds and research into Arctic geology and climate.
The Pay-Khoy Range is a low to moderate mountain chain in northwest Russia, located in Nenets Autonomous Okrug on the Arctic margin. It forms part of the northern structural belt that continues the fold systems of the Urals toward the Arctic seas.
Topography consists of elongated ridges and valleys with generally modest elevations compared with central Urals, supporting tundra and sparse boreal vegetation. The area is characterized by cold Arctic climate conditions and permafrost.
The range is geologically significant as part of the northern orogenic system related to the Ural fold belt and has been studied for its structural geology and stratigraphy. Human presence is sparse and seasonal, tied mainly to resource exploration and indigenous use.
Geographically it lies north of the main Russian plain in Nenets Autonomous Okrug, running roughly east-west and bordering coastal areas of the Barents and Kara Sea basins.
- Environment: The range forms part of the northernmost folded mountain belts in European Russia and lies in a remote Arctic environment with permafrost and tundra vegetation.
