The Pavilion of Prince Teng (Tengwang Pavilion) is a historic Chinese pavilion located on the east bank of the Gan River in Nanchang, Jiangxi province, originally established in the Tang dynasty in 653 AD. It is one of China’s famous historic towers and has been celebrated in Chinese literature.

The pavilion complex contains multiple exhibition halls and public viewing levels that offer framed views of the Gan River and the surrounding city. The site is well known for its classical Chinese architectural form, ornate decorative woodwork in rebuilt sections, and cultural displays related to its long literary and artistic associations.

The original tower dates to 653 AD and was built under the patronage of Li Yuanying, a Tang dynasty prince; it was rebuilt several times over the centuries. The current structure is a modern reconstruction that follows traditional styles and functions as both a cultural museum and a scenic landmark.

The pavilion sits on the riverside in central Nanchang, Jiangxi, overlooking the Gan River and within the urban fabric of the city. It is accessible from Nanchang’s central areas and forms part of the riverside visitor attractions.

  • Literary fame: Famed in Chinese literature for the Tang-dynasty poet Wang Bo's "Preface to the Pavilion of Prince Teng", which greatly boosted the site's cultural status.
  • Reconstruction: The present pavilion is a modern reconstruction of the historic tower that stands on the east bank of the Gan River and is a major riverside landmark in Nanchang.

  • Arrive early (before 9:30am) to avoid tour groups and to climb the upper levels when the light on the Gan River is still soft.

  • Take the elevator for convenience but climb at least one stairwell: the restored wooden galleries are louder and smell of varnish, which oddly adds to the experience.
