Pattadakal

Pattadakal is a temple complex in northern Karnataka, India, famous for a group of 7th- and 8th-century Chalukya monuments. The site contains a series of stone temples that demonstrate a blend of northern and southern Indian architectural styles and is recognised for its sculptural quality.

Key monuments include the large Virupaksha Temple and several smaller Hindu shrines alongside a Jain temple; the carved pillars, elaborate doorway reliefs and stepped plans illustrate the period’s architectural experimentation. The complex is part of the broader cultural landscape that includes nearby sites such as Aihole and Badami.

Pattadakal was built under Chalukya patronage as a ceremonial and religious centre, with inscriptions and construction phases reflecting the political and devotional life of the time. The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its architectural and historical significance.

It is located in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka in the Deccan region, within a landscape of low hills and agricultural land and close to the better-known early Chalukyan sites of Aihole and Badami.
