Pasargadae
Archaeological Site Ancient Achaemenid royal tombs and archaeological ruins
The early Achaemenid dynastic site containing Cyrus the Great’s tomb and palace ruins north of Shiraz. Visitors study the tomb’s simple stone masonry, walk axis alignments and read inscriptions set among open archaeological fields.
Pasargadae is the archaeological remains of the first dynastic capital of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, established by Cyrus II in the mid-6th century BCE. It is located in Fars province in southern Iran and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004.
The site’s principal highlight is the stone mausoleum traditionally called the Tomb of Cyrus, a freestanding structure from the mid-6th century BCE. The wider complex contains palace remains, audience halls and evidence of a formal garden and water-management features associated with a royal residence.
Construction and layout date to the Achaemenid period under Cyrus II and his successors; the city served as a royal capital and ceremonial center rather than a long-term administrative capital. Over centuries the buildings fell into ruin and were subject to later reuse and archaeological investigation from the 19th century onward.
Pasargadae sits in Fars province on the Iranian plateau, on gently rolling terrain between the Zagros foothills and the central plain. The site is accessed from regional roads linking it to the modern city centers in Fars province.
