Parque del Buen Retiro (commonly El Retiro) is Madrid’s principal historic public park located near the city centre and originally created as a royal park in the 17th century. The park covers roughly 118 hectares and is a major recreational and cultural green space in the city.
The park’s main attractions include the large rectangular pond edged by the semicircular colonnade and the monument to Alfonso XII, the late 19th-century Palacio de Cristal - a glass and iron exhibition pavilion dating from 1887 - and the extensive rose garden which hosts hundreds of varieties. Paths, sculptures, fountains and seasonal exhibitions make the park popular for walking, boating, picnics and cultural events.
Retiro was laid out for the Spanish monarchy in the early 17th century during the reign of Philip IV; later centuries saw additions including ornamental architecture and garden remodels. Much of the royal palace that gave the park its name was demolished, and the grounds were progressively converted to public use in the 19th century.
