Park Güell
Park Public park with Gaudí's colourful mosaic architecture
Antoni Gaudí’s Park Güell features mosaic benches, serpentine terraces, tiled pavilions and stone viaducts set on a hillside with views over Barcelona; visitors explore his organic architectural forms and public spaces.
Park Güell is a public park complex on Carmel Hill in Barcelona designed principally by architect Antoni Gaudí in the early 20th century. It combines architectural elements, mosaics and landscaped gardens and forms part of the city’s Gaudí heritage.
Key attractions within the park include the Mosaic Dragon at the main entrance, a large tiled serpentine bench on the principal terrace and a series of colonnaded walkways and pavilions that showcase Gaudí’s use of color and organic forms. The site functions both as a landscaped public park and as an outdoor museum of Gaudí’s inventive architectural language.
The project was developed between about 1900 and 1914 as an upscale housing estate that largely remained unrealised; it was later converted into a municipal park. The park’s built elements and decorative ceramics reflect Gaudí’s characteristic use of natural motifs and structural innovation.
Park Güell is located on the El Carmel slope of Barcelona’s Gràcia district, a short drive or a moderate metro/bus trip from the city centre and offering elevated views across the city.
- Dates: Much of the park was designed and built under Antoni Gaudí between 1900 and 1914 as part of a planned housing development that was never completed.
- UNESCO status: The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list within the 'Works of Antoni Gaudí' ensemble of buildings in Barcelona.
What to See #

- Parkland and viewpoints: Parkland and walking paths on the hillside offering panoramic views over Barcelona and the sea on clear days.
How to Get to Park Güell #
Park Güell is on Carmel Hill in the Gràcia district. The closest metro stops are Vallcarca (L3) and Lesseps (L3); both require a steep 10-20 minute uphill walk to the main entrances, or you can take bus 24 which stops nearer the park. From Plaça de Catalunya the park is roughly 3-4 km north (about a 10-20 minute drive depending on traffic) - expect steep walking inside the park.
Tips for Visiting Park Güell #
- Buy a timed-ticket for the Monumental Zone and book the earliest slot; arriving at opening gives you the famous terrace and main mosaics before the tour groups arrive.
- Enter from the upper park entrances (the Carrer d'Olot/Travessera de Dalt side) to reach the Monumental Zone more directly and avoid long lines at the busy southern access near the main stairs.
- After visiting the paid Monumental Zone, walk into the free areas higher in the park - they're much quieter, offer different Gaudí features (viaducts and stone benches) and provide broad city views that many day visitors miss.
Best Time to Visit Park Güell #
Visit Park Güell in spring or autumn for pleasant weather and smaller crowds; early mornings are best in summer.
