Parium
Archaeological Site Ancient Greek city ruin on Turkey's Aegean coast
On the Sea of Marmara coast in Çanakkale Province, Parium preserves ruins of an ancient Greek port city. Travelers inspect archaeological remains and seaside vistas while visiting the Troad’s classical sites.
Parium (also Parion) was an ancient Greek city located on the Asiatic shore of the Hellespont in what is now Çanakkale Province, Turkey. It served as a coastal trading and maritime centre in antiquity.
Archaeological remains at the site include portions of city walls, burial features and traces of the urban fabric reflecting habitation through Greek, Hellenistic and Roman periods. The city functioned as an intermediate port on routes between the Aegean and the Black Sea.
Over centuries Parium’s strategic coastal position influenced its development and connections to wider regional polities and trade networks. Like many coastal sites, its fortunes rose and fell with changing political and economic conditions.
The ruins lie on the southern shore of the Sea of Marmara near the mouth of the Hellespont in Çanakkale Province in northwestern Turkey.
- Harbor city: Functioned as an important ancient port city on the Hellespont (Dardanelles) and played roles in classical, Hellenistic and Roman maritime networks.
