Parintins, Brazil hosts a unique three-night folklore competition built on the Amazonian Boi-Bumbá tradition: two neighbourhood teams - Garantido and Caprichoso - present elaborate theatrical shows combining music, dance and storytelling to claim the trophy. What started as local folkloric celebrations has grown into an organised, island-wide festival with strong local identity.

Nightly productions take place in the purpose-built Bumbódromo arena, while the rest of the island fills with costume workshops, rehearsals, street bands, food stalls and rehearsed fan sectors. Expect an electric atmosphere of partisan crowds, booming drums, oversized floats and theatrical tableaux that blur ritual, pageant and sporting rivalry.

Parintins’s festival happens in June, typically over the last weekend of the month; the core competition is concentrated in three main nights with surrounding events in the days before and after. Dates are fixed annually in late June rather than by a movable religious calendar.

Each evening features full-length staged presentations by both teams that are judged across multiple categories, and the final night produces the official winner after the cumulative scoring.

The main international gateway is Manaus (Eduardo Gomes International Airport); from there you can take a short domestic flight to Parintins or choose an overnight river service from Manaus. Flights and accommodation fill quickly around the festival - plan to arrive at least a day early and book arena tickets and transfers well in advance.
