Parihaspore
Archaeological Site Ruins of an early medieval Kashmiri capital city
Parihaspore contains ruins of a medieval Kashmiri city founded in the 8th century; visitors survey stone foundations, temple remains and wide valley views outside Srinagar.
Parihaspore (Parihaspura) is an early medieval archaeological and ruin site in the Kashmir Valley, with remains dating to the 8th century. It was established as a royal center and temple complex during the Karkota dynasty.
The visible remains are principally stone foundations, scattered carved fragments and ruined structural elements that mark the footprint of palaces and temples rather than intact buildings. The site is visited for its archaeological significance and the surviving sculptural fragments.
Parihaspore was founded under King Lalitaditya Muktapida in the 8th century as a royal foundation and religious complex, and it later declined, leaving only ruins and archaeological deposits that document its former status. Excavations and historical study have identified the site as an important center for early medieval Kashmir.
The site lies within the Kashmir Valley in present-day Jammu and Kashmir, set among the valley landscape rather than in a major urban center; it is accessed from nearby towns and roads serving the region.
- Founding era: Founded as a royal site in the early medieval period by King Lalitaditya of the Karkota dynasty, with surviving ruins dating to the 8th century.
