Paphos Castle
Castle Medieval fortification at Paphos harbor
At Paphos harbour, the medieval Paphos Castle overlooks fishing boats and the seafront promenade; tourists combine castle visits with the nearby archaeological park and coastal walks.
Paphos Castle is a fortified structure that guards the harbour at Kato Paphos in western Cyprus. The site dates back to the Byzantine period and has been rebuilt or repaired by subsequent medieval and Ottoman rulers.
A compact fort with ramparts, towers and a walkable roof area offering panoramic views of the harbour and sea. The castle is used for visitor sightseeing and hosts occasional cultural events and exhibitions.
Originally a Byzantine fortification, the structure was destroyed and rebuilt several times by Lusignan, Venetian and Ottoman authorities; the visible building today reflects later medieval and Ottoman-era repairs and reconstructions. It has also served practical roles such as a prison and military post in different periods.
Perched at the end of the harbour in Kato Paphos, the castle sits adjacent to the archaeological park and the harbour promenade in the coastal town of Paphos.
- Harbour location: Sits at the seaward end of the Paphos harbour and provides elevated views across the harbour and the Mediterranean coastline.
How to Get to Paphos Castle #
Paphos Castle stands on the harbour in Kato Paphos and is in the city’s seafront area. It’s walkable from the Kato Paphos promenade and nearby hotels and restaurants; if driving, follow the harbour/sea front road (Poseidonos avenue) and use nearby public parking. The castle is also reachable on foot from the central Paphos harbour precinct; local buses and taxis serve the harbour area from the city centre.
Tips for Visiting Paphos Castle #
- Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid cruise-ship crowds and the worst heat; both times offer better light for photographing the harbour and castle silhouette.
- Enter from the harbour promenade to combine a harbour walk with the castle visit, then climb the ramparts for the best panoramic views of the marina and coastline.
- Combine a short visit to the castle with a stroll along the adjacent harbourfront cafés and fishing piers-many visitors hurry past the ramparts without taking the top-level viewpoints.
Best Time to Visit Paphos Castle #
Aim for spring (March-May) or early autumn (September) to visit Paphos Castle when the weather is pleasant and crowds are smaller than in high summer.
