Paphos Archaeological Park
Museum Archaeological site with extensive Roman mosaics and ruins
Paphos Archaeological Park preserves Roman villas, intricate floor mosaics and the Hellenistic Odeon; visitors come for archaeology, coastal ruins and sites tied to Greek mythology like nearby Petra tou Romiou.
Paphos Archaeological Park is a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological complex on Cyprus’s southwest coast, incorporating Roman-period villas, public buildings and tombs. The site is renowned for extensive and well-preserved mosaic floors and remains from antiquity.
Key highlights include several Roman villas with large polychrome mosaics illustrating mythological scenes, an Odeon (small Roman theatre), a forum area and coastal ruins. The mosaics and villa layouts are among the principal reasons for the site’s UNESCO designation.
The remains in the park span Hellenistic and Roman periods, with many of the surviving decorative floors created between the 2nd and 5th centuries AD; parts of the site have been conserved under protective structures to preserve the mosaics.
The park lies in Kato Paphos adjacent to the modern harbour and town centre, on the southwestern coast of Cyprus, within easy walking distance of Paphos port and the city’s tourist amenities.
- Mosaic highlights: Many of the park's best-preserved floor mosaics date to the Roman period, primarily the 2nd to 5th centuries AD, and are protected under sheltering structures.
What to See #
- House of Dionysos: Large Roman villa famous for its well-preserved mosaics depicting scenes from mythology, including Dionysos motifs dating from the 2nd to 5th centuries AD.
- House of Theseus: Roman-era villa noted for its mosaic floors illustrating the labours of Theseus and other mythological scenes.
- Odeon: A small Roman theatre used for public performances and local gatherings; its remains are part of the coastal archaeological complex.
