Pantikapaion
Archaeological Site Ancient Greek colony and archaeological site on Crimea
On Kerch’s coast, the ancient Greek city of Pantikapaion leaves ruins and museum finds from a Hellenistic trading port; archaeology trails and local displays attract visitors interested in Black Sea antiquity and ancient ceramics.
Pantikapaion was an ancient Greek polis on the site of modern Kerch in eastern Crimea, founded by colonists from Miletus in the early first millennium BC. It became the principal city of the Bosporan Kingdom and a major trading and cultural centre on the Cimmerian Bosporus.
Surviving remains include foundations of public buildings, defensive walls and extensive burial mounds in the surrounding plain. The archaeological record preserves imported Greek goods and locally produced items that illustrate long-term trade and cultural exchange.
Founded in the 7th century BC by Greek settlers, the city grew through Classical and Hellenistic periods to become the capital of a Hellenistic state, later incorporated into the Roman world and then subject to successive political changes in the medieval era. Its fortunes declined over centuries, leaving archaeological remains as the primary testimony.
The site lies at the eastern end of the Crimean peninsula, beside the Kerch Strait close to the modern city of Kerch, occupying a coastal position that controlled maritime routes between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
- Museum collections: Excavated finds from the site are displayed in museums in Kerch and elsewhere, including imported Greek pottery and local Bosporan-period artifacts.
What to See #
- Acropolis: The fortified acropolis area overlooking the city site with remains of defensive walls and public buildings from the Greek and Hellenistic periods.
- Necropoleis: Extensive burial grounds and tumuli found in the surrounding area, containing grave goods now housed in local museums.
