Panorama Mesdag

Panorama Mesdag is a late 19th-century cyclorama in The Hague created by the painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag and his studio that presents a continuous panoramic view of Scheveningen and the North Sea. The work is housed in a rotunda built to display the cylindrical painting.

The installation combines a large circular painting, approximately 14 meters high and 120 meters in circumference, with a foreground diorama to create an immersive illusion of the coastal landscape. Visitors view the scene from a central platform where the painting surrounds the viewer.

Commissioned and installed in 1881, the panorama was part of the 19th-century vogue for large-scale panoramic spectacles and has been preserved as a museum piece and cultural attraction. Conservation and restoration efforts have maintained the painting and its display environment.

The Panorama Mesdag museum is located in The Hague in South Holland, Netherlands, and is accessible from the city’s cultural quarter.
