Valley Mountain valley known for resistance and emerald scenery

Panjshir Valley is a long, narrow mountain valley in northeastern Afghanistan notable for its rugged scenery and strategic importance. The valley has a strong association with local resistance movements and is the administrative centre of Panjshir Province.
The valley offers steep-sided ridges, terraced fields, the Panjshir River and mountain passes that attract visitors for trekking and for visits to local villages and memorials. The principal local site of contemporary interest is the mausoleum and memorial complex in Bazarak commemorating Ahmad Shah Massoud.
Historically the Panjshir Valley was the base for anti-Soviet mujahideen operations in the 1980s and later served as a center of resistance against the Taliban in the 1990s and 2000s; Ahmad Shah Massoud is a central figure in that history. Control and governance of the valley have been politically and militarily significant throughout recent Afghan history.
Geographically the valley lies north of Kabul within the Hindu Kush foothills and is drained by the Panjshir River; the provincial capital Bazarak sits within the valley. The terrain is mountainous and relatively remote from Afghanistan’s major lowland population centres.
