Pangong Tso is an endorheic lake in the high Himalaya that straddles the boundary between Indian-administered Ladakh and Tibet (China). The lake sits at roughly 4,350 meters above sea level and is notable for its long, narrow shape and seasonal changes in water colour.

The lake is about 134 kilometers long in total, with only the western end lying in Indian-administered territory and the remaining portion extending into Tibet. The western sector near Leh is the part most frequently visited by tourists for photography, camping, and scenic drives.

Pangong Tso is saline and partly freezes in winter; it lies on the high Changtang plateau and has long been used by nomadic Changpa herders. In recent decades the lake has also been a sensitive border area, and access can be regulated by authorities.

The lake occupies a high-altitude valley in Ladakh; the commonly used approach from Leh is a road journey of roughly 150 kilometers to the lake’s Indian-accessible western shore.

  • High altitude requirement: Sits at high altitude (about 4,350 meters), so visitors should acclimatize before traveling and expect cold conditions outside summer months.
  • Border and permit status: The lake spans the India-China border and parts of it lie in Tibet; visitors to the Indian side often need permits, particularly foreign nationals.
