Panaitan is an island in the Sunda Strait off the west coast of Java in Indonesia. It is a rugged, largely uninhabited island known for coastal ecosystems and maritime recreation.
The island’s shoreline offers reefs, beaches and surfable breaks; visitors typically come for diving, snorkeling and surfing rather than built attractions. There are no permanent settlements and access is by boat from mainland West Java.
Panaitan is of volcanic origin and has long been sparsely populated or used seasonally by fishermen and visitors. It has not developed large-scale permanent habitation or urban infrastructure.
Situated in the Sunda Strait within Indonesia’s Banten province, the island lies off the western headland of Java and forms part of the maritime region between Java and Sumatra.
