Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park preserves the site of the first major U.S. engagement of the Mexican-American War, located near Brownsville in southern Texas and interpreted by the National Park Service. Over time the sites have been preserved and interpreted by federal and local efforts; the area is managed as a National Park Service unit to protect battlefield topography and tell the history of the campaign.
The park sits in Cameron County in the Rio Grande Valley, south Texas, near the city of Brownsville and close to the U.S.-Mexico border. The landscape is low-lying coastal plain characterized by prairie and seasonal wetlands.
