Palazzo Senatorio is the municipal palace on Rome’s Capitoline Hill and serves as the seat of the city government. The building forms the central part of the Capitoline civic complex designed in the Renaissance.
The palazzo provides a terrace and loggia with direct views over the Roman Forum, and the exterior faces the piazza redesigned by Michelangelo in the 16th century. The building’s façade and clock tower are key features of the Capitoline ensemble.
Constructed on the ruins of the ancient Tabularium and reshaped during the Renaissance, the Capitoline piazza and surrounding palaces were completed following designs by Michelangelo in the mid-16th century. Palazzo Senatorio has housed municipal government functions since the medieval period and continued as the city’s administrative centre.
Perched on the Capitoline Hill in central Rome, the palazzo overlooks the Roman Forum and sits adjacent to the Capitoline Museums and other civic buildings.
