Palazzo Rucellai

Palazzo Rucellai is a 15th-century urban palace in the historic centre of Florence, Tuscany, built for the wealthy Rucellai family and generally dated to the mid-1400s. The palace’s articulated façade, using pilasters and a tripartite horizontal division, is an important early Renaissance design often attributed to Leon Battista Alberti.

Exterior features include three storeys of ordered masonry with classical motifs adapted for a domestic palazzo; the interior contains a courtyard and family residential spaces arranged around it. The building exemplifies the application of learned classical architecture to private urban commissions in Renaissance Florence.

Commissioned by the Rucellai family in the mid-15th century, the palace has been studied for its architectural innovation and influence on later palaces in Italy. Its façade and proportions are frequently cited in architectural histories of the period.

The palazzo sits within Florence’s historic centre, among other Renaissance-era palaces and close to the city’s principal cultural and civic landmarks.
