Palazzo del Te

Palazzo del Te is a Mannerist suburban palace in Mantua, Lombardy, designed and built by Giulio Romano in the 16th century for the Gonzaga family. It is notable for large-scale fresco cycles and its role as a pleasure villa rather than a fortified residence.

Expansive frescoed reception rooms, ornamental courtyards, and water features integrated into the palace plan. Visitors typically focus on the frescoes in rooms such as the Sala dei Giganti, richly decorated ceilings, and the palace’s courtyard and moat.

Constructed for Federico II Gonzaga between about 1524 and 1534, the building was intended as a place for entertainments and private residence for the Gonzaga court. Over time it was repurposed and today functions as a museum and cultural site preserving the original decorative program.

The palace sits within the city of Mantua, a short distance from the historic centre, and is accessible by road and on foot from the city’s main squares.
