Palais-Royal
Palace Historic Parisian palace with gardens and shopping arcades
Palais‑Royal in Paris features 17th‑century arcades, formal gardens and the Comédie‑Française; visitors stroll the courtyard and galleries, shop under the colonnades and cross to the Louvre through a compact historic precinct.
Palais-Royal is a historic palace complex and formal garden in Paris’s 1st arrondissement, immediately north-west of the Louvre. It occupies a central urban block and is notable for its arcaded galleries and public courtyard garden.
The site combines a formal planted garden, sheltered arcades with shops and cafés, and a large central courtyard. The courtyard contains Daniel Buren’s striped-column installation, installed in 1986, and the arcades house long-established boutiques and cafés that open onto the garden. The surrounding buildings accommodate state institutions while the garden remains a popular public promenade.
The original residence was built in the 17th century for Cardinal Richelieu; after his death it passed into royal hands and became known as the Palais-Royal. Over subsequent centuries the complex was redeveloped with arcades and gardens and took on commercial and institutional roles while remaining a social and cultural center in Paris.
The Palais-Royal sits in central Paris between Rue de Rivoli and Rue Saint-Honoré, a short walk from the Louvre and the Seine. It is in the 1st arrondissement, with major metro and pedestrian access from the surrounding streets.
