Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin
Historical Site Ensemble of palaces and landscaped parks near Berlin
Potsdam’s Sanssouci and Berlin’s palatial sites showcase Prussian royal residences, formal gardens and neoclassical architecture; tourists visit Sanssouci Palace, Cecilienhof and the Neuer Garten for guided tours and park walks.
The Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin are a serial cultural landscape of palaces, parks and garden ensembles in and around Potsdam and parts of Berlin, primarily developed in the 18th and 19th centuries. The property illustrates the evolution of Prussian court architecture and landscape design over two centuries.
The largest attractions are the hilltop Sanssouci Park with its cluster of palaces and terraced gardens, and the imposing New Palace, which exemplifies 18th-century Prussian representation. Throughout the property visitors encounter formal garden layouts, axial vistas, sculptural ornament and lakeside promenades; many sites include visitor tours of principal state rooms. Walking and cycling routes link major ensembles and make the designed landscapes a primary reason to visit.
The ensembles were developed by Prussian monarchs from the reign of Frederick the Great in the mid-18th century through the 19th century, with successive rulers adding palaces, follies and landscaped parks. Over time the complexes served as royal residences, administrative centres and representational settings, and many were adapted in the 19th century to new imperial tastes.
The sites are concentrated around Potsdam, southwest of central Berlin, with some palaces and parks extending into the western suburbs of Berlin. Potsdam lies about 25 kilometres southwest of central Berlin and the property spans both urban and suburban landscapes.
- Serial composition and period: The World Heritage property comprises a series of palace and park ensembles in Potsdam and Berlin dating mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries and reflecting Prussian royal and imperial tastes.
- Designed landscapes: Many sites are set within designed landscapes - formal terraces, riverfronts and Romantic parks - that remain largely intact and open to the public for walking and garden viewing.
