Palace of the Porphyrogenitus
Palace Small Byzantine palace noted for ornate brickwork
Near Istanbul’s Theodosian Walls, the Palace of the Porphyrogenitus (Tekfur Sarayı) dates to the late Byzantine period and now houses a small museum showcasing medieval stonework and architectural fragments.
The Palace of the Porphyrogenitus, also known as Tekfur Sarayı, is a late Byzantine palace located in the Blachernae quarter of Istanbul beside the city walls. It dates to the late 13th or early 14th century and is one of the better-preserved secular Byzantine structures in the city.
A compact site of masonry and brickwork with multiple floors and vaulted spaces that display medieval construction techniques. The interior is used for rotating exhibitions and occasional cultural events, and the exterior can be examined from the adjacent city walls and walkways.
Built by Byzantine elites in the late Byzantine period, the building has served varied functions over time including defensive, administrative and storage uses under successive regimes. It underwent significant restoration in the 20th and 21st centuries to stabilize the structure and adapt it for public access.
Sited in the northwestern sector of the historic peninsula, the palace stands directly on the Walls of Constantinople near the Golden Horn and the Blachernae area of Istanbul.
