Palace of Portici

The Palace of Portici is an 18th century Bourbon royal palace on the Bay of Naples in the town of Portici, originally built as a royal residence near the excavations at Herculaneum. It was constructed for the Bourbon court and later repurposed for academic and public uses.

Visitors see the grand palace façades and internal courtyards that reflect mid 18th century royal architecture, together with adjacent gardens and service wings. The grounds include a historic botanical garden and agricultural research facilities now associated with the University of Naples.

Built in the mid 18th century for Charles of Bourbon as a seaside royal palace, the complex later accommodated various public institutions and scholarly facilities. Its proximity to Herculaneum influenced early museum and conservation activities in the area.

The palace sits on the seafront at Portici on the Bay of Naples in Campania, positioned between Naples and the archaeological sites along the Vesuvius shore.
