The Palace of Daphne belonged to Constantinople’s Great Palace on Istanbul’s historic peninsula. Visitors encounter its remains when touring Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome area and nearby archaeological sites.
The Palace of Daphne was a named residential quarter within the Byzantine Great Palace complex of Constantinople, located on the eastern side of the imperial palace precinct. It functioned as part of the imperial residential and ceremonial arrangements during the Byzantine period.
Today the palace survives only in archaeological traces and historical sources; its remains lie beneath and around the historic Sultanahmet area of Istanbul. What survives are fragments recorded in excavations and in descriptions by Byzantine historians.
Historically the Daphne section was developed in the late Roman and early Byzantine eras as part of the Great Palace, which evolved over centuries as the main imperial residence. It was connected to other palace components and to the adjacent imperial Hippodrome.
The site of the former palace is on Istanbul’s historic peninsula, in the area around the Hagia Sophia and the old Hippodrome in what is now central Istanbul.
