Paklenica
National Park Karst national park popular for hiking and rock climbing
Paklenica National Park in the Velebit range protects the deep canyons Velika and Mala Paklenica and limestone cliffs popular with climbers. Visitors come for technical rock routes, marked hiking trails and backcountry mountain scenery.
Paklenica National Park lies on the southern slopes of the Velebit mountain range in northern Dalmatia and is noted for its dramatic limestone canyons, karst landscapes and biodiversity. The park’s principal features are two deep canyons, Velika and Mala Paklenica, which cut into the massif and provide routes for hiking and climbing.
Trails of varying difficulty lead from the canyon entrances into gorges and up to alpine meadows higher on the Velebit, and the park supports a mix of Mediterranean and mountain flora and fauna. The steep vertical cliffs attract climbers from across Europe and the park maintains paths, refuges and information for visitors.
Paklenica is located inland from the Adriatic coast in Zadar County, reachable by road from the city of Zadar and serving as a gateway to the Velebit mountain trails and nearby coastal towns.
- Climbing: The park is a major climbing area with hundreds of routes on steep limestone cliffs; climbers should use established routes and check local regulations and seasonal restrictions.
What to See #
- Velika Paklenica: Velika Paklenica, the larger of the two main canyons, carved into the southern face of the Velebit massif and serving as the primary access for trails and climbing routes.
- Mala Paklenica: Mala Paklenica, a narrower canyon with steep limestone walls and paths used for shorter hikes and access to remote gorges.
