Päijänne
Lake Finland's long lake with islands and freshwater
Finland’s Lake Päijänne stretches across forested islands and archipelagos. People visit for boating, canoeing, fishing, summer cottages and the marked trails and granite skerries of Päijänne National Park.
Päijänne is a large lake in south-central Finland and is the country’s second-largest lake by area. It is elongated north-south and contains numerous islands and wooded shorelines popular for boating and outdoor recreation.
The lake supports island camping, boating routes and fishing, and parts of its central island groups are protected within Päijänne National Park, which preserves islands, shoreline and water habitats. The lake region is used year-round for summer water activities and winter recreation on and near the ice where conditions permit.
A notable engineered link is the Päijänne Water Tunnel, which transfers raw water from the lake to the Helsinki metropolitan area for municipal supply. The lake and its islands are accessible from towns along the shore, with Lahti situated at the southern end.
Geographically the lake lies in southern Finland and spans several municipalities and regions, forming a significant freshwater resource and recreation area in the Finnish lakeland.
- Size and extent: It is Finland's second-largest lake and stretches roughly 120 kilometres from north to south, with an area on the order of about 1,100 square kilometres.
- Access city: Lahti is a major city located at the southern end of the lake and serves as a common access point for recreation and boat services.
What to See #
- Päijänne National Park: Päijänne National Park protects parts of the lake's central island clusters and shoreline, offering trails and boat access for visitors.
- Päijänne Water Tunnel: The Päijänne Water Tunnel is a major infrastructure project that draws raw water from the lake to supply the Finnish capital region; the tunnel begins at the lake's southern end.
How to Get to Päijänne #
Päijänne is a large lake running roughly between Lahti and Jyväskylä. For the southern/park access points, take the VR regional train from Helsinki to Lahti (about 1-1.5 hours, roughly 100 km), then use local/regional buses or drive from Lahti along local roads to the lake shore and park entrances. Much of the lake is reached from roads radiating north from Lahti (via the E75/National Road 4) or from towns on the lake by boat.
Tips for Visiting Päijänne #
- Use Lahti or Padasjoki as gateway towns-regular regional roads and transport connections run from these towns and they have the most boat rental and excursion options for exploring Päijänne's islands.
- Plan island-hopping or kayaking in mid-summer when navigation between islands and visitor services are fully running; many of the lake's best bits (small islands and secluded bays) are only reachable by boat, so confirm ferry or rental schedules in advance.
- Avoid the busiest picnic spots by heading to less-developed islands or shorelines away from the main marinas; map out specific landing places beforehand because official landing sites and facilities can be sparse outside the main harbours.
Best Time to Visit Päijänne #
Best visited in summer for water activities, or winter if you want to experience the frozen lake and ice sports.
