Padre Island
Island Longest barrier island in Texas with coastal habitats
Padre Island, Texas, is a long Gulf barrier island with extensive beaches, the Padre Island National Seashore, sea-turtle nesting and surf fishing. Visitors come for birding, beach driving and coastal wildlife.
Padre Island is a barrier island off the coast of southern Texas that runs for roughly 113 miles and separates the Gulf of Mexico from the shallow hypersaline lagoon called Laguna Madre. The island includes undeveloped natural coastline, protected areas and developed resort sections.
Shorelines on the Gulf side provide long sandy beaches and dunes, while the lagoon side supports estuarine habitats and birdlife; the island includes the federally protected Padre Island National Seashore that conserves a large undeveloped stretch of coastline. The southern end hosts the resort community of South Padre Island, which provides most visitor services, lodging and recreational amenities.
Geologically the island is formed by longshore sediment transport and barrier-bar dynamics typical of Gulf Coast islands and supports nesting for marine turtles and a variety of shorebirds. Human use ranges from conservation and wildlife management to tourism, fishing and local residential communities.
Padre Island lies off the coast of south Texas along the Gulf of Mexico, adjacent to cities such as Corpus Christi to the north and Brownsville to the south; it is accessed by bridges and ferry services at several points along the coast.
- Length and role: At roughly 113 miles (about 180 kilometres) long, it is widely recognised as one of the world's longest barrier islands and separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Laguna Madre lagoon system.

- North Padre Island: The northern and central stretches of the island closer to Corpus Christi, featuring residential areas and access points to the Laguna Madre side.

Tips for Visiting Padre Island #
- Use the Malaquite Visitor Center (access via Park Road 22) as your starting point for Padre Island National Seashore-it's the main orientation hub for trails, permits and current beach conditions.
- If you plan to drive on the beach, check vehicle-access rules, required permits and tide forecasts beforehand; portions of the seashore allow beach driving but conditions and regulations change seasonally.
- Birding and exposed sandbars are most productive at low tide and in the early morning; time visits accordingly for the best wildlife viewing and quieter stretches of beach.
